The product group released the June 2023 Cumulative Update for SharePoint Server 2019 product family. SharePoint Server 2019 is patched with a language dependent and a language independent fix.
The KB article for June 2023 CU will be available at the following Location in a couple of hours:
- KB 5002402 – June 2023 Update for SharePoint Server 2019 (language independent)
This is also a security update! - KB 5002403 – June 2023 Update for SharePoint Server 2019 (language dependent)
This is also a security update!
The downloads for June 2023 CU are available through the following links:
- Download June 2023 Update for SharePoint Server 2019 (language independent)
This is also a security update! - Download June 2023 Update for SharePoint Server 2019 (language dependent)
This is also a security update!
Important: It is required to install both fixes (language dependent and independent) to fully patch a SharePoint server. This applies also to servers which do not have language packs installed. The reason is that each SharePoint installation includes a language dependent component together with a language independent component. If additional language packs are added later (only) the language dependent fix has to be applied again.
It is irrelevant which language you pick on the drop down in download center. Even the language dependent fixes are all in the same package for all languages.
After installing the fixes you need to run the SharePoint 2019 Products Configuration Wizard on each machine in the farm. If you prefer to run the command line version psconfig.exe ensure to have a look here for the correct options.
Please ensure to have a look at the SharePoint Patching Best Practices before applying new fixes.
SharePoint 2019 June 2023 CU Build Number:
Language independent fix: 16.0.10399.20005
Language dependent fix: 16.0.10399.20005

Hi Stefan,
I am aware of the Issue with the application Pools staying in stopped state after a solution deployment / update. Thus we removed the Farm Account beforehand. Still there is an issue with the pools being in stopped state after a REBOOT of the servers. The Event ID 5021. This is a new behaviour after the servers were running fine for weeks. Every time we reboot they need to be started manually. All app pool identities have all rights they need and they can be started manually without any issue. Might this also be related to May 2023 CU or is this a new problem?

Hi Marc,
this is not related to the May 2023 CU issue.
FYI: the 5021 event usually means that username/password for the application pool are not correct.
Cheers,
Stefan

Hi Stefan, thank you for your reply.
I know what the Event ID 5021 means and thus we checked every account, GPO or security setting, none has changed or expired or anything else past few weeks. The pools also run smoothly when we manually start them without any errors. This is a total new behaviour after installing May 2023 CU and May 2023 OS CU (Server 2019). We dont have that behaviour on other non-patched Farms.

Hi Marc,
thanks for the update – I would recommend to open a support case with Microsoft for IIS. Application Pool start and Event ID 5021 are under control of IIS and not SharePoint and this would need to be investigated by the IIS support team.
Cheers,
Stefan

Hi Stefan, regarding the critical vulnerability CVE-2023-29357 addressed in this CU, Microsoft mentions: “Customers who have enabled the AMSI integration feature and use Microsoft Defender across their SharePoint Server farm(s) are protected from this vulnerability.” “Microsoft Defender with AV engine version 1.1.18300.4 or higher (alternatively a compatible AMSI-enabled third-party antivirus/antimalware software)” is mentioned as a prerequisite for enabling the AMSI feature. We use Trend Micro Deep Security on our systems. Does this also count as compatible AV software so we could enable the AMSI feature?

Hi Reto, we cannot comment on 3rd party products. Please contact Trend Micro to get a confirmation.

OK thanks, Stefan. I thought you might have a list of compatible products. But perspicuous… I’ll check with Trend Micro.

Hi Stefan, are you aware of any issues like missing of left hand navigation or “Site information”, “Site permissions”? After installing the June patch to 16.0.10399.20005 we are facing this on all sites. It is visible when navigating directly to site contents or any page except for home.
Did this come back from 2022?

Thanks for your valuable advise.

Hi Stefan, after disabling / enabling the side-by-side functionality the navigation seemed to be back again. At the moment we do not know why this happened but looking further for a potential root cause. If others are facing the same issue if zdp is in place, all what we did is whats written above. Maybe worth a try.

Hello, we noticed after patching that list items cannot be edited or created in modern view. It works in the classic view. Is there anything known about this?

Hi User,
there is a known issue where this happens if the relevant list contains a hyperlink column.
See here: https://blog.stefan-gossner.com/2023/06/23/trending-issue-sp2019-creating-or-updating-list-items-in-modern-experience-not-possible-after-june-2023-cu/

Hey Stefan,
Oddly this patch fixed an issue where my users couldn’t write back from Outlook to a SharePoint list which Microsoft is still trying to investigate. I believe the issue was introduced with an earlier patch, possibly April (we skipped March), but also had installed Feb.
Have you heard of this or know of any changes in the code that could be why this functionality has been restored.

Hi Greg,
I have not heard about this issue.

Stefan

Hi. Since installing the June 2023 CU for SharePoint we see a couple of issues. The hyperlink column in lists as mentioned above is an issue and we are also seeing the ‘Download’ button disappear when more than 1 item in a library is selected. Has anybody else seen this??

Hello Stefan,
The pages where we have Bamboo Data Viewer Web part users are getting Access Denied.
If the web part is removed the page opens
The web part is configured to pull information from other sub-sites.
