The product group released the August 2023 Cumulative Update for SharePoint Server 2019 product family. SharePoint Server 2019 is patched with a language dependent and a language independent fix.
The KB article for August 2023 CU will be available at the following Location in a couple of hours:
- KB 5002436 – August 2023 Update for SharePoint Server 2019 (language independent)
This is also a security update! - KB 5002422 – August 2023 Update for SharePoint Server 2019 (language dependent)
This is also a security update!
The downloads for August 2023 CU are available through the following links:
- Download August 2023 Update for SharePoint Server 2019 (language independent)
This is also a security update! - Download August 2023 Update for SharePoint Server 2019 (language dependent)
This is also a security update!
Important: It is required to install both fixes (language dependent and independent) to fully patch a SharePoint server. This applies also to servers which do not have language packs installed. The reason is that each SharePoint installation includes a language dependent component together with a language independent component. If additional language packs are added later (only) the language dependent fix has to be applied again.
It is irrelevant which language you pick on the drop down in download center. Even the language dependent fixes are all in the same package for all languages.
After installing the fixes you need to run the SharePoint 2019 Products Configuration Wizard on each machine in the farm. If you prefer to run the command line version psconfig.exe ensure to have a look here for the correct options.
Please ensure to have a look at the SharePoint Patching Best Practices before applying new fixes.
SharePoint 2019 August 2023 CU Build Number:
Language independent fix: 16.0.10401.20025
Language independent fix: 16.0.10401.20025

Hello Stefan,
I just want to inform you, that there is a typo in this blog article: 2x language independent, but the links go to the correct (language independent & language independent) download files.
Best regards,
Gerhard

For me the typo is still there (under “The downloads for August 2023 CU are available through the following links”)
But more importantly: Thanks for your great work and all the information on this website!

Thanks. The typo was there twice and I fixed only the first instance. now it should be correct in all places.

Hello Stefan, has there been any reports about new bugs in this new August CU? I would like to know before i install it on our systems.
Thank you!

Hi Rje,
that would be very fast. Usually we start getting such reports after a couple of days/weeks.
Cheers,
Stefan

Hello, Stefan,
We have accidently installed language pack for June 2023 and core security pack for July 2023 on our Sharepoint 2019 environment.
Due to this we are now dealing with difficuilties while trying to rename a Sharepoint list item.
After this we have installed the August CU (both security and language pack), which did not fix our problem.
What would You recommend us to do to fix this, please?
Thank You very much!
Daniel
P.S. We are thinking about downgrading to the previous version of CU, we had instaled – March 2023 (both security and language pack), and which was fine, but we are not certain whether this is a safe action in general to perform in our case.

Hi Daniel,
SharePoint fixes cannot be uninstalled and SharePoint databases cannot be downgraded.
The only way to achieve this would be to do file system restore together with a database restore to a previous cold backup (backup while all services were stopped).
About the issue: I would recommend to open a ticket with Microsoft support to get this analyzed.
Cheers,
Stefan

Hi Stefan,
I first tried to install the patches on our SP2019 test system. The language independent file “sts…” (KB5002436) does not come to an end. The progress bar is completely filled at probably 100% but never finishes. Any thoughts?

Hi Stefan,
Has anyone reported experiencing „Sorry Something Went Wrong“ error messages intermittently on the Items That Need Attention view on SharePoint lists or libraries? We started experiencing this after the August 2023 update installation.
Thank you in advance for any information you may have.

Do we have to do anything special with the distributed cache or are all those issues fixed in this release.

Hi Danny,
no specific settings required. All relevant fixes are included in this CU.
Cheers,
Stefan
