The product group released the September 2014 Cumulative Update for the SharePoint 2013 product family.
For September 2014 CU we again have full server packages (also known as Uber packages). Unlike August 2014 CU no other CU is required to fully patch SharePoint.
ATTENTION:
Be aware that all Update for SharePoint 2013 require SharePoint Server 2013 SP1 OR March 2013 PU for SharePoint 2013 to be installed first.
Please also have a look at the article that discusses how to properly patch a SharePoint 2013 farm which has Search enabled (see below).
Previous releases of the SharePoint Server 2013 cumulative update included both the executable and the .CAB file in the same self-extracting executable download. Because of the file size, the SharePoint Server 2013 package has been divided into several separate downloads. One contains the executable file, while the others contain the CAB file. All are necessary and must be placed in the same folder to successfully install the update. All are available by clicking the same Hotfix Download Available link in the KB article for the release.
This CU includes all SharePoint 2013 fixes released since RTM. The CU does not include SP1. You can install SP1 before or after installing this CU.
The KB articles for September CU are available at the following locations:
- KB 2883087 – SharePoint Foundation 2013 September 2014 CU
- KB 2883068 – SharePoint Server 2013 September 2014 CU
- KB 2883072 – SharePoint Server 2013 with Project Server September 2014 CU
- No Office Web Apps Server 2013 CU released this month
The Full Server Packages for September 2014 CU are available through the following links:
- Download SharePoint Foundation 2013 September 2014 CU
- Download SharePoint Server 2013 September 2014 CU
- Download Project Server 2013 September 2014 CU
After installing the fixes you need to run the SharePoint 2013 Products Configuration Wizard on each machine in the farm.
Be aware that the SharePoint Server 2013 CU contains the SharePoint Foundation CU. And the SharePoint Server 2013 with Project Server CU contains Project Server CU, SharePoint Server CU and SharePoint Foundation CU.

Where can we see a full listing of what the Sept. CU fixes? For instance, does it fix the orphaned items issue introduced with the April CU? Thank you.
Hi David,
the issues being fixed are listed in the KB articles of the hotfixes. If you need further details or if you are waiting for a specific fix we recommend to open a support case with Microsoft as that will guarantee that you are notified when a fix for a specific
issue has been released.

Hi Stefan,
Thank you for the updates. Was the issue with personal site link in people search result is broken due to encoding for '' between domain name and user name resolved in SEPT updates?
Thank you,

Hi Carl,
that fix should be included in Sept CU.

We're looking to fix the same issue Carl is referring to. Still getting my head around Sharepoint patching though, so could configm for me, KB 2883087 is an "Uber" update going from it having a file with fix name ubersrv2013kb2883068fullfilex64glb in one
of the files (http://support2.microsoft.com/hotfix/KBHotfix.aspx?kbnum=2883068&kbln=en-us) so I don't need to install KB 2883087 as well – correct?

Hi Mark,
I assume you mean "…2883068 is an Uber update…".
If you install 2883068 you don’t have to install 2883087. As 2883068 includes the SharePoint foundation fixes.
If you read my article in full detail you will see it here: "Be aware that the SharePoint Server 2013 CU contains the SharePoint Foundation CU"

Stefan

Thanks Stefan, that is indeed what I meant to ask. I'd been looking into the mysteries of Sharepoint patching for a few hours prior to making my post and my eyes were starting to glaze over 🙂

Hi Stefan,
I’m not clear about the updates to install in my SharePoint farm.
Currently I have August 2013 CU installed. After installing September 2014 CU, Do I need to install SP1 update?.
Hi Hugo,
if SP1 has not yet been installed you have to install it.

Stefan

So we download both the cab files and the exe (All 3 files) at the "Download SharePoint Server 2013 September 2014 CU" link?
Hi Kevin, yes that is correct. Copy all 3 files into the same directory and run the exe.
Is MS14-050 included in the CUs?
Hi Stefan, I downloaded "SharePoint Server 2013 September 2014 CU" (478313_intl_x64_zip.exe). After running the exe, all it extracted was a hotfix.txt and a ubersrv_2.cab. The text file says to run hfx.exe but there's no hfx.exe included in the download.
Is hfx.exe included in any previous CUs?
Thank you.
Hi Conway,
seems you downloaded only one of the 3 files.
You need to ensure that you are downloading all 3 files as I have written in the article above:
Previous releases of the SharePoint Server 2013 cumulative update included both the executable and the .CAB file in the same self-extracting executable download. Because of the file size, the SharePoint Server 2013 package has been divided into several separate
downloads. One contains the executable file, while the others contain the CAB file. All are necessary and must be placed in the same folder to successfully install the update. All are available by clicking the same Hotfix Download Available link in the KB
article for the release.

Hi Randy,
all fixes released before this CU are included in this CU.
So the answer is yes.

Hello Stefan,
Something strange has happened: i installed this CU in our test environment, but the Build Number is still 15.0.4649.1000. Any ideas?

Hi Gabriel,
what do you mean by "still"? Which version did you expect?

Hi Stefan
We are Planning to Install SP1 + Sep CU in Dev Box
Previously we tried with SP1+ May CU and Identified ". Edit Page Properties Error: “Item does not exist. It may have been deleted by another user.”
To get over this we are planning for SP1 + Sep CU in Dev Box
Current Dev Box having SP1+ May CU on top we want to Install SEP CU
If we want to build new Dev Box is that good SP1+ Sep CU by not installing May CU
Please Confirm

Hi Sudheer,
confirmed. SP1 + Sept CU is sufficient.

Stefan

so what i need to do for it please.
if i need to download updates so please give me links.
please help me.
Hi Anuj,
the 15.0.4420.1017 is the RTM version number.
That means your system is in an unsupported state.
You have to install at least SP1.

Stefan

Hi, The update is no longer available for download.
I want to add a new server to the farm but when i run the configuration wizard it’s reporting this KB as missing.
Is there a way we can get a link to download it ?
Hi Constantin,
the patch level of this CU is unsupported since a long time and it has been pulled from download center.
You should install a current CU instead on your farm.
Cheers,
Stefan
Permalink
The latest patch installed is July 2019.
How can i run the configuration wizard if it needs the 2014 patch?

Hi Constantin,
in this case I would recommend to open a support ticket with Microsoft to investigate what is missing here.
