Important: Be aware that June 2013 CU for SharePoint 2010 is a Post-SP2 CU. That means that SP2 does not include June 2013 CU. It does not matter if SP2 is installed before or after June 2013 CU – just be aware that in order to be on the latest patch level you need to have as well SP2 and June 2013 CU installed.

Update July 31st: It is recommended to install June 2013 CU before SP2. June 2013 CU might not correctly identify the SP2 baseline. If SP2 has already been installed and June CU does not install you need to wait for August CU which will correctly identify the SP2 baseline.

Per KB2687520, "after you upgrade the SharePoint Web Front End (WFE) from Windows Server 2008 (R2) to Windows Server 2012, certain SharePoint Designer-customized views that have custom XSL templates may be broken. Moreover, the update can compromise server responsiveness. To resolve this issue, you can install the SharePoint Server update from June 2013 or a later version Cumulative Update (CU) after you upgrade the operating system."

    So it would appear that the order of install (i.e., June 2013 CU AFTER SP2) does matter?

  2. It states "after you upgrade the operating system" not "after you install SP2".

    It should not matter if SP2 is installed first or June 2013 CU.

    This is exciting!

    One dumb question: could you tell me the version number after installing sp2?

    I installed it, and the number is still "14.0.7102.5004" which is CU 201306r2

  4. Hi Eric, I'm not in the office right now, so I cannot look it up – but it would be a number lower than 7102.5004 as June CU is post SP2.

    So when installing SP2 after June will not change the version number as June CU contains newer fixes than SP2.

    i look at the file size of Project Server 2010 SP2 and see it is about 450MB.

    Why it is so small hin relation to the cummulative updates?

    service packs are only for one language – you need to install separate service packs for each language. CUs contain fixes for all language packs.

    I installed clean version SharePoint 2010, then install SP2 for foundation and for server, after that try to install CU June 2013, after checking product version get next message:

    Expected version of the product was not found on system

  9. Upgraded our dev farm to SP2 today, so far no nasty surprises. It seems they finally got around having to restart user profile sync service after installing an update and some other small bugs that have been in Sharepoint since SP1.

  11. my customer has installed June 2013 and they haven't deployed SP2 yet. Here are the questions on SP2.

    1. Is it mandatory to apply SP2 for applying any future cumulative updates  ?

    2. Can customers apply any future CUs (eg: Aug CU 2013) and then later apply SP2 ?

  12. Hi Sowmyan,

    It is recommended to install SP2 as soon as possible – but not mandatory.

    SP1 will be supported for 12 month after SP2. So in the next 12 month you can install CUs either on SP1 or SP2.

    You can also install SP2 at any given time in the future over later CUs.

  15. @Roman – I was able to get June ’13 CU and Service Pack 2 installed by following these steps:

    1. If not yet done, Install SP1 + June 2011 CU

    2. Then install June 2013 CU

    3. Now you can install SP2 + any later released CU.

    you can skip SP1 and also June 2011 CU.

    RTM, June 2013 CU and then SP2 is fine.

    soory – my fault! Forgot that June CU requires SP1. So that's required. Or wait till August CU is out and install that after SP2.

    I need to install sharepoint foundatin 2010 sp2 on an existing windows 2012 box – is there anyway to get a full copy of this?  You cannot complete the install of regular sharepoint foundation 2010 without SP2 on windows 2012 and so it doesn't matter that its now supported for me!

    Any info is appreciated.

  22. Same question as Robert C – desparate for full ISO inc. SP2 as SharePoint 2010 is the only system we've been unable to migrate to our new Windows 2012 infrastructure (which went live last weekend). Users have lost access because it's a new domain as well. Please don't make us installed Windows 2008 🙁

    there is no need to install June 2011 CU. That CU is included in SP2.

    Regarding June 2013: you should skip that as well and use the August 2013 CU instead.

    Here I would install SP2 first, afterwards August 2013 CU.

    I'm in need of some serious help, i installed this patch support.microsoft.com/…/2817552 to resolve an issue which it seemed to do but i found out later on that it broke some functionality in the sharepoint farm.

    the error occurs when someone tries to add an event in the calendar & this issues seems to be across the entire sharepoint 2010 foundation farm.

  27. Hi Biztalk,

    it is not possible to uninstall SharePoint fixes. You would need to restore the DB from before applying the patch as the DB schema is changed with the fix as well.

    Regarding the issues you are facing: I would recommend to open a support case with Microsoft Support to get them analyzed.

    SP2 is supported on Windows 2012. If you upgrade the OS of an SP2010 Installation, then ensure to have SP2 installed. If you need to install SP2010 directly on Windows 2012 you need the slipstream Installation of SP2010 with SP2.

    There is a confusion on Project server 2010 SP2 KB2687452. Microsoft KB artical says that this is included in Sharepoint server 2010 SP2 KB2687453 but the Project server Technet blog says that it is other way round. KB2687452 includes KB2687453 by seeing the file size.

    SharePoint SP2 does NOT include Project fixes. Based on the files size the Project Server SP2 includes the SharePoint SP2.

    you can install SP2 directly on RTM.
    SP2 for SharePoint Server contains SP2 for foundation. No need to install separately.

  51. Hello Stefan, Hope you are doing well. We have a requirement to install Project server 2010 in an existing sharepoint 2010 Farm which is currently updated with SP2 + Dec 2013 CU and running for long time.
    Is it possible to install project server 2010 in this existing farm with the below steps? will it work?
    1. Install Project server 2010 RTM Binaries in all servers
    2. Install Project server 2010 SP2 in all servers (Hope Project server 2010 SP1 has be included in SP2?)
    3. Install Project server Dec 2013 CU in all servers
    4. Reboot the servers
    5. Run Psconfig in all severs.
