The product group recently released the March 2013 Public Update (PU) for the SharePoint 2013 product family.
Important: Due to a change in the package configuration introduced after SharePoint 2013 RTM the March Public update is a mandatory requirement in order to install subsequent SharePoint 2013 Updates.
That means that in order to install future cumulative updates for SharePoint 2013 it will be mandatory to first install the March public update.
- KB 2768000 – SharePoint Foundation 2013
- KB 2767999 – SharePoint Server 2013
- KB 2768001 – Project Server 2013
The Full Server Packages for March 2013 PU are available through the following links:
- Download SharePoint Foundation 2013 March 2013 PU
- Download SharePoint Server 2013 March 2013 PU
- Download Project Server 2013 March 2013 PU
After installing the fixes you need to run the SharePoint 2013 Products Configuration Wizard on each machine in the farm.
Be aware that the SharePoint Server 2013 PU contains the SharePoint Foundation PU. And the Project Server 2013 PU contains SharePoint Server PU and SharePoint Foundation PU.
That means only one package has to be installed for the SharePoint 2013 product family.

Worth calling out here that there are specific steps required for servers running Search components. Details here: go.microsoft.com/fwlink

Stefan,
Do you have any idea why the Titles of these are now only (Public) "Upgrade" rather than "Cumulative Upgrade" which has been the standard for many years?
Yes, I saw that they write in the text that it is a cumulative upgrade, but it seems incorrect to me that – especially as this upgrade is essential for future upgrades – that they should have chosen this particular CU for a name change.

Hi Mike,
we always had PUs and CUs. But that's a common question.

Does the March 2013 PU contain everything in the Feb 2013 CU? If not, does the Feb 2013 CU contain the fixes in the March 2013 PU?

Hi Andy,
there is no Feb 2013 CU for SharePoint 2013.

Hi Stefan,
Do you know what will happen if someone installs August Cu for example without installing March PU. Would it be another solution other than re-installing the farm?
Thanks,
Sabs

Hi Sabs,
the fix will not install.

Hi Stefan,
There is no other PU for 2013 other than March, right? One SharePoint PFE was saying about Oct PU but I'm not finding one such.
Just wanted to confirm with you.
Thanks for your help as always!

Hi Stefan,
I am confused. In an earlier post, you mentioned the March CU for SP2013:
http://blogs.technet.com/b/stefan_gossner/archive/2015/03/10/march-2015-cu-for-sharepoint-2013-has-been-released.aspx
Also the Feb 2015 CU here:
http://blogs.technet.com/b/stefan_gossner/archive/2015/02/10/february-2015-cu-for-sharepoint-2013-has-been-released.aspx
I am currently at SP1 + Dec 2014 CU.
So can I just apply March 2015 PU? Do I need to install the March 2015 CU?
Thanks,
Paul

Hi Paul,
March CU includes March PU.
March PU can be installed without March CU.
Cheers,
Stefan

@Paul
You confused the Years! 😉
This Bolg post here is from 21 Mar 2013. Whereas you link to the March CU from the year 2015.
If you install a slipstream SharePoint 2013 with SP 1, the March PU from 2013 from this Blog here should be already incorporated.
Cheers
Andy

Do we still need to install March PU if we are on SP1?
