Yesterday the product group released the October 2010 Cumulative Update for the SharePoint 2007 and 2010 product family.
The KB articles are not yet available (as usual it will take a couple more days to get these through the required release process) but the fixes can already be downloaded.
As soon as the KB articles are live they can be found at the following locations:
- KB 2412268 – WSS 3.0
- KB 2412267 – MOSS 2007
- KB 2394323 – SharePoint Foundation 2010
- KB 2394320 – SharePoint Server 2010
- KB 2394322 – SharePoint Server 2010 with Project Server
As you see there is a separate Full Server Package for SharePoint Server 2010 with Project Server which simplifies patching of this common installation.
The Full Server Packages for October 2010 CU can be downloaded here:
- Download WSS 3.0 October 2010 CU
- Download MOSS 2007 October 2010 CU
- Download SharePoint Foundation 2010 October 2010 CU
- Download SharePoint Server 2010 October 2010 CU
- Download SharePoint Server 2010 with Project Server October 2010 CU
After installing the fixes you need to run the SharePoint 2010 Products Configuration Wizard on each machine in the farm.
For the 2010 Server Products it is sufficient to install the SharePoint Server 2010 package as it includes the SharePoint Foundation package.

Thanks for the links. However the SPF download link does not seem to work. Regards, Felix

Hi Felix,
this issue should be resolved shortly.
If you have SharePoint Server 2010 you don't need this package.

Stefan

Hmmm, still unable to request any of the downloads. Getting message, "The system is currently unavailable. Please try back later, or contact support…" How long is "shortly," Stefan?
Also, I believe you that the packages are inclusive, now (yeah!), but if that's really the case, then the KBs need to be updated. In the "More Information" section of the KBs, it says, "Note To resolve these issues, you must apply the cumulative update packages in the following articles together with this cumulative update package:" and lists the other packages. This leads us to believe the packages are not inclusive–like they were in the past.

Hi Paul,
the responsible team is looking into the issue with the missing package. "Shortly" means: the package will be available when the problems preventing it from being available is resolved.
Thanks for the hint with the problem in the KB article. I have requested an update to the KB article to remove the incorrect info.
Cheers,
Stefan

Any idea as to when the updated versions will be available?

Hi Nico,
The fix will be rereleased as soon as possible but you have to be patient.
First the issue has to be fixed and then the fix has to be tested again.

Stefan

What if this CU install fails.. or the site experiences unusual errors that are catastropic? Is there a way to back out the CU's?

Hi Joseph,
it is highly recommended to create a backup of your farm (file system and SQL database) before installing a SharePoint hotfix. As SharePoint hotfixes modify the database content (schema and/or stored procs) it is not possible to uninstall the hotfixes.
You have to restore a backup (file system and SQL) to roll back.
Cheers,
Stefan
