Yesterday the product group released the December 2010 Cumulative Update for the SharePoint 2007 and 2010 product family.
The KB articles are not yet available (as usual it will take a couple more days to get these through the required release process) but the fixes can already be downloaded.
As soon as the KB articles are live they can be found at the following locations:
- KB 2458606 – WSS 3.0
- KB 2458605 – MOSS 2007
- KB 2459125 – SharePoint Foundation 2010
- KB 2459257 – SharePoint Server 2010
- KB 2459258 – SharePoint Server 2010 with Project Server
As you see there is a separate Full Server Package for SharePoint Server 2010 with Project Server which simplifies patching of this common installation.
The Full Server Packages for December 2010 CU can be downloaded here:
- Download WSS 3.0 December 2010 CU
- Download MOSS 2007 December 2010 CU
- Download SharePoint Foundation 2010 December 2010 CU
- Download SharePoint Server 2010 December 2010 CU
- Download SharePoint Server 2010 with Project Server December 2010 CU
After installing the fixes you need to run the SharePoint 2010 Products Configuration Wizard on each machine in the farm.
For the 2010 Server Products it is sufficient to install the SharePoint Server 2010 package as it includes the SharePoint Foundation package.

Thanks Stefan,
Dec CU (KB 2459257) is stable stable. Tested it on several environments and it's going to production now. Hence 3:54 AM :).

Stefan,
Do I still need to install the October CU or are those fixes rolled into the December CU?
Thanks 🙂

Hi Dave,
the word "cumulative" in cumulative update means that a CU contains all earlier CUs.
So December CU contains October, August, … CU
Cheers,
Stefan

Stefan, thanks for the reply. It seemed silly asking but I had to 🙂

It sounds like there are already several issues that have been identified that are caused by installing the December CU for SharePoint Server. Should we hold off on it for now? support.microsoft.com/…/2459257

Hi Tray,
where did you get this message from?
Personally I have not heared about a single problem caused by the December CU – and I should have if customers in Europe would have reported such issues to Microsoft support.
Cheers,
Stefan

Hey Stefan, there are 2 seperate known issues posted on the kb article for the December Cumulative. This is what makes me hesitant to install it. See here: support.microsoft.com/…/2459257

Hi Tray,
these are issues which were known when the hotfix was released.
Workarounds for the issues are listed in the KB as well.
Cheers,
Stefan

My web analytics service has stopped working ever since I installed the December CU. Has anyone else experienced this?

Hi Stefan,
I have looked high and low for any hints as to when SP2010 SP1 is being released, and more specifically, does it plan to make any significant changes to My Sites. This information does not seem to be readily available. Do you happen to have answers to these two questions?
Thanks, Clark

Hi Clark,
customer ready information about SP1 is not yet available.

Stefan

Hi Stefan,
in the SharePoint 2010 update center I read, as a best practice, to install SPF updates before to install SharePoint Server updates. In your post I read that we can skip the first step. What is the best way to preceed?
Thank you
Riccardo

Hi Riccardo,
the SharePoint 2010 Server CUs contain the SPF fixes. There is no need to install them separatelly.
Cheers,
Stefan

the "Download MOSS 2007 December 2010 CU" link is not valid ?
Where to download MOSS2007 Decemeber 2010 CU?
Hi David,
December CU has been pulled from the download servers due to a regression. Please use Feburary 2011 CU instead.
Cheers,
Stefan

Ohh :(.. I only just installed December 2010 in production (a few weeks ago now). But now have a requirement to move servers to 32bit so was looking for 64bit release of Decemeber 2010 CU for moss, found the WSS one.
So you are telling me I have to patch production to january first? (you can send me the dec moss one if you have it 🙂 )

Hi David,
sorry – but I'm not allowed to send out a fix which has been pulled from the hotfix servers.
Cheers,
Stefan
