  1. Hi Stefan

Advising a colleague on the update of an Office Online server for the June CU. I’m not proficient on it myself, but have some older experience, whereas she is new to the system and learning.

Can you advise whether an office Online server update is considered part of the SharePoint Farm update process? Internally, this server is considered part of the SharePoint estate in as much as it has Office Online on it and is listed in our inventory as “sharepoint”, but best I can tell there are no SharePoint components installed on it. Our vulnerability tool shows the June 2025 SharePoint Server update is required on the 3 official SharePoint servers (App server and 2 front ends), but isn’t showing for this Office Online one.

Reason I ask, is I want to advise her whether she can patch the office online server without being concerned the Farm itself will then be expecting the config wizard to run.

    Any tips appreciated.

    1. Hi Tommy,
Office Online Server is a separate product from SharePoint and must not be installed on a SharePoint Server.
Office Online Server uses different patches than SharePoint.
      Cheers,
      Stefan

  2. Tommy,

In my company, we, too, have Office Online Server as part of the SharePoint inventory. Not every month has an OOS update from Microsoft. Thus, OOS tends to be on the vulnerabilities report less frequently.

Because Office Online Server is a separate product from SharePoint, your coworker will not need to run the SharePoint config wizard.

In my opinion, best practice is to keep the SharePoint and OOS patches in sync. For example, if you install the June CU in SharePoint, then you should install the June update for OOS. I have never installed an OOS update that is “greater than” my SharePoint CU (e.g., SP June 2025 and OOS July 2025), so I can’t speak to whether that would cause issues.

One other recommendation is to patch SharePoint and Office Online Server after Windows patching.

    Here’s the order I follow.
    1. Windows patching
    2. SharePoint patching
    3. Office Online Server patching

    I hope this helps!

    Theresa
