December 2021 CU for SharePoint Server 2019 is available for download

The product group released the December 2021 Cumulative Update for SharePoint Server 2019 product family. SharePoint Server 2019 is patched with a language dependent and a language independent fix.

The KB article for December 2021 CU will be available at the following Location in a couple of hours:

  • KB 5002054 – December 2021 Update for SharePoint Server 2019 (language independent)
This is also a security update!
  • KB 5002061 – December 2021 Update for SharePoint Server 2019 (language dependent)
This is also a security update!

The downloads for December 2021 CU are available through the following links:

Important: It is required to install both fixes (language dependent and independent) to fully patch a SharePoint server. This applies also to servers which do not have language packs installed. The reason is that each SharePoint installation includes a language dependent component together with a language independent component. If additional language packs are added later (only) the language dependent fix has to be applied again.

It is irrelevant which language you pick on the drop down in download center. Even the language dependent fixes are all in the same package for all languages.

After installing the fixes you need to run the SharePoint 2019 Products Configuration Wizard on each machine in the farm. If you prefer to run the command line version psconfig.exe ensure to have a look here for the correct options.

Please ensure to have a look at the SharePoint Patching Best Practices before applying new fixes.

SharePoint 2019 December 2021 CU Build Number:

Language independent fix: 16.0.10381.20001
Language dependent fix: 16.0.10381.20001

  1. Why does it say “Core” for Security Update for Microsoft SharePoint Server 2019 Core (KB5002054)?

    1. Hi Girish,
it just a naming thing. It is the part of the product which does not include any language specific pieces.

  2. We are installing these updates on our SP 2019 on prem environment. Updates installed no problem but Products Configuration Wizard on the first application server has been sitting at step 9 of 10 “the farm is being upgraded in the timer service process. the task is at 10.00%” for 2.5 hours now. I keep checking the update logs and they are updating so it is working but VERY slow. Anyone else had this issue before or know how to speed things up?

  3. Hello, I’ve been struggling with the 2019 updates released yesterday. When running products configuration wizard on the first app server it gets stuck on step 9 of 10. I read numerous articles outlining to clear the config cache and run config wizard in command line. This hasn’t worked and we are going to restore snapshots of the farm VMs. Before I try installing updates again how can I avoid this scenario? Thanks

    2. Mike,
Did you find resolution meaning => What was the cause of the ‘getting stuck” on step 9 of 10 running the products configuration wizard/psconfig.exe?

      1. Hello Sue,

Yes we determined the issue was related to lack of permissions on our secondary SQL node. I failed over the HA group to the primary node and was able to run the wizard successfully. We haven’t been able to determine the missing permissions on the secondary node, everything looks OK, but this lack of permissions doesn’t seem to affect day to day functionality on our sites, just when running the config wizard.

  4. Hi Stefan,
I need to clarify information about language pack instalation. We have installed two language packs at all Sharepoint Servers: English and Polish. Can or should we uninstall one of them ? Which? Our Operating Servers are in English Version. When we try install language pack in english version we get error: “There are affected by this package installed on this system”, language pack in polish is installed properly. We want clear this situation with December update.

    1. Hi Adam,
you can install as many language packs as you need in your environment.
As mentioned in the article above you only have to apply the language independent fix once – it does not matter which language you pick on the dropdown. The language dependent fix includes the fixes for all languages.
      Cheers,
      Stefan

  5. This appears to be the first time that both patches KB5002054 and KB5002061 are showing up in MS Updates, instead of just the first one showing up and breaking things until you manually download and install the other. If I use MS Updates for this month in Production and it loads both patches, are they cumulative so I don’t have to worry about last month’s manual install or will I still need to download and install all previous months’ second updates? Thank you.
