September 2021 CU for SharePoint Server 2019 is available for download

The product group released the September 2021 Cumulative Update for SharePoint Server 2019 product family. SharePoint Server 2019 is patched with a language dependent and a language independent fix.

The KB article for September 2021 CU will be available at the following Location in a couple of hours:

  • KB 5002018 – September 2021 Update for SharePoint Server 2019 (language independent) – This is also a security update!
  • KB 5002019 – September 2021 Update for SharePoint Server 2019 (language dependent)

The download for September 2021 CU is available through the following link:

Important: It is required to install both fixes (language dependent and independent) to fully patch a SharePoint server. This applies also to servers which do not have language packs installed. The reason is that each SharePoint installation includes a language dependent component together with a language independent component. If additional language packs are added later (only) the language dependent fix has to be applied again.

It is irrelevant which language you pick on the drop down in download center. Even the language dependent fixes are all in the same package for all languages.

After installing the fixes you need to run the SharePoint 2019 Products Configuration Wizard on each machine in the farm. If you prefer to run the command line version psconfig.exe ensure to have a look here for the correct options.

Please ensure to have a look at the SharePoint Patching Best Practices before applying new fixes.

SharePoint 2019 September 2021 CU Build Number:

Language independent fix: 16.0.10378.20002
Language dependent fix: 16.0.10378.20002

  1. Hi Stefan,
We were told there were two know issues in the August 2021 CU :
    – The “Edit Page” button is not visible anymore
    – News.aspx shows an error message.
Are they fixed in this CU?
    Thanks,
    SL

    1. Hi Sylvain,

I haven’t heard about these issues and I just double checked and also haven’t found any fix requests related to these keywords.

        1. Hello Sylvain, We saw the “Edit Page” button issue with the August CU, but only when the language dependent update was not also installed. The issue is windows update only offers the security related update, whereas you need to manually download the other, and then install and run the Products Configuration Wizard. Cheers

    2. The “Edit Page” and News.aspx issues are fixed after clearing the browser cache. Please check that.

  2. On a SP single dev server after running the updates:

    sts2019-kb5002018-fullfile-x64-glb.exe – Completes as expected.
wssloc2019-kb5002019-fullfile-x64-glb.exe – Says there are no products affected by this package on this system.

Your article says both are required for a full update, is this ok to proceed?

    1. Hi Kevin,

      indeed – both are required.
If you get this message it is usually due to one of the following two reasons:

      1) the fix was already installed before (you can confirm in Control Panel – Installed Updates)
      2) the MSI installer database is corrupt and the fix cannot find the relevant packages to update

If you need assistance to get this resolved I would recommend to open a support case with Microsoft.

      Cheers,
      Stefan

  4. Hello Stefan,

I am on the way to get a SP2019-Environment ( of a Customer ) patched next Week.

A little concern is cause of the Comment of BC:

    Hello,

Thanks for your informations about updates. I successfully installed these last updates and ran configuration wizard well without errors. I’m on SharePoint server 2019. Everything is running fine, except a few little problems on modern sites themes :

The top bar has lost the theme’s color and is now black, except for the apps button
The left navigation menu elements don’t have the background color when mouse is hover anymore

On classic experience, this doesn’t happen and changing theme of the site doesn’t help

It’s not a big deal, but I wonder why I have these kind of problems and how to solve it… If you have an idea?

    Thanks,

Do there any known problems are mentioned or raised to MS-Support?

    1. Hi Stefan,
the top bar issue is known. It is a side effect of a fix.
The PG is currently investigating options to resolve this.
I would recommend to open a support case to get notified about the progress.
I’m not aware of the left nav issue you raised. I would recommend to open a ticket for this issue to get this analyzed.
      Cheers,

The Patching is planned for next week ( Tuesday till Thursday ).

With this Update we will now discuss the situation with the Customer.
And within this new Information we will see to take the “Risk” or wait till “October 2021 – Patch”.

  5. Hi Stefan,
Our deployment of SharePoint 2019 / 2016 Patches is based on an internal WSUS and installed with PowerShell. We aren’t getting the Language Independent Patches through WSUS – they aren’t in the Update Catalog. Any idea how to solve this problem?

    1. Hi Daniel,

I might be wrong as I’m not a WSUS expert but afaik WSUS only contains the security fixes.
The recent language dependent fixes are not security fixes.

      Cheers,
      Stefan
