April 2020 CU for SharePoint Server 2016 is available for download

The product group released the April 2020 Cumulative Update for SharePoint Server 2016 product family.

This CU also includes Feature Pack 1 which was released with December 2016 CU and Feature Pack 2 which was released with September 2017 CU.

The KB articles for April 2020 CU are available here:

  • KB 4484299 – April 2020 Update for SharePoint Server 2016 (language independent) – This is also a security update!
  • KB 4484301 – April 2020 Update for SharePoint Server 2016 (language dependent) – This is also a security update!

The download for April 2020 CU is available here:

Important: It is required to install both fixes (language dependent and independent) to fully patch a SharePoint server. This applies also to servers which do not have language packs installed. The reason is that each SharePoint installation includes a language dependent component together with a language independent component. If additional language packs are added later (only) the language dependent fix has to be applied again.

It is irrelevant which language you pick on the drop down in download center. Even the language dependent fixes are all in the same package for all languages.

After installing the fixes you need to run the SharePoint 2016 Products Configuration Wizard on each machine in the farm. If you prefer to run the command line version psconfig.exe ensure to have a look here for the correct options.

SharePoint 2016 April 2020 CU Build Numbers:

Language independent fix: 16.0.4993.1000
Language dependent fix: 16.0.4993.1000

To understand the different version numbers please have a look at my article which explains the different SharePoint build numbers.

Please ensure to have a look at the SharePoint Patching Best Practices before applying new fixes.

  1. Hi Stefan,
I have noticed that the Microsoft SharePoint Insights is gone after we applied the April 2020 CU for SharePoint 2016 farm.
Is there any impact? Our SharePoint 2016 farm is using Cloud Search.
    Please advise us.
    Many thanks in advance.

  2. Hello, Stefan!
We skipped March 2020 CU and went straight to April 2020 CU for our SharePoint 2016 farm. We applied both language dependent and independent patches. Our vulnerability scanner is complaining about KB4484275 which is the March 2020 language dependent security update. Wouldn’t this be superseded? Can we still apply KB4484275 and run PSCONFIGUI.exe? or that’s not recommended?

    Please advise. Thanks!

    1. Hi Pityur,
4484275 from March CU is included in 4484301 from April CU.
Did you install any additional language packs after installing April CU? That could explain it as these language packs would be on RTM and would not have these fixes.
If this is not the case and 4484301 was installed then there is no need to install 4484275. It will also not possible to install it.
And in this case it would mean that your vulnerability scanner produces a false positive.
      Cheers,
      Stefan

        1. Hi Kotesh,
did you install both files from April CU?
If yes, then you are fully patched.
          Cheers,
          Stefan

          1. Hello Stefan,
Thank you for your reply. I installed both files and ran the config wizard. From SP point of view , we are fully patched to Apr CU. But when we ran the scan , results are showing as March update files were missing.

            Thank you,
            Kotesh.

          2. Hi Kotesh,
in this case I would suggest to contact the vendor of the security scanner to check why it is reporting a missing fix.
            Cheers,
            Stefan

  3. Hello Stefan, firstly thank you so much for all the detailed posts. It is very easy to follow.
I have a question, like how we used to make use of PatchIT.ps1 script from Russmax to speed-up SP2013 patching, can we use the same script on SP2016 too?
Does SP2016 patching take longer time to install the binaries, like SP2013?
    Please advise

    1. See Trevor Seward’s reply to this exact question here:
      https://github.com/Nauplius/SharePoint-Patch-Script/issues/15

In short: SP2016 does not really need the Russ Maxwell patch installation script (or the updated version by Trevor), since SP2016 doesn’t have the same slow installation issues. But Trevor’s updated patch script/module has some other convenient features that might be nice, like pausing search and download of patches.
