August 2017 CU for SharePoint Server 2016 is available for download

The product group released the August 2017 Cumulative Update for SharePoint Server 2016 product family.
This CU also includes Feature Pack 1 which was released with November 2016 CU.
The KB articles for August 2017 CU are available at the following location:

  • KB 4011049 – August 2017 Update for SharePoint Server 2016 (language independent)
  • KB 4011053 – August 2017 Update for SharePoint Server 2016 (language dependent fixes)
  • There was no fix released for Office Online Server 2016 in August 2017

The download for August 2017 CU is available through the following link:

Important: It is required to install as well the language independent and the language dependent fix to fully patch a SharePoint server as each SharePoint installation comes with a language independent component and a language dependent component. If additional language packs are added later (only) the language dependent fix has to be applied again.
It is irrelevant which language you pick on the drop down in download center. Even the language dependent fixes are all in the same package for all languages.
After installing the fixes you need to run the SharePoint 2016 Products Configuration Wizard on each machine in the farm. If you prefer to run the command line version psconfig.exe ensure to have a look here for the correct options.
SharePoint 2016 August 2017 CU Build Numbers:
Language Independent fix: 16.0.4573.1002
Language Dependent fix: 16.0.4573.1000
To understand the different version numbers please have a look at my article which explains the different SharePoint build numbers.
You can use the SharePoint Server 2016 Patch Build Numbers Powershell Module to identify the patch level of all SharePoint components.

  1. Thanks for sharing this information. Is there any recommendation on the installation order for CU/Patches ? e.g. install on WFE first and on APP server last or other way ?
    Thanks

    1. Hi Umr,
we recommend to install it first on the App server hosting the central admin and also recommend to start with this server later when running PSConfig.

  3. Hi,
Do you know why no language dependent fixes can’t be installed on any server?
In a previous post you said that we will need to install both updates. But when if i try to install one with language dependent fixes(wssloc….) it is saying that there are no products affected by this update.

    1. Hi Ionut,
      both fixes are required.
The message you got usually indicates that the fix has already been installed.
If the fix has not yet been installed then the behavior you get is not expected and you should open a support case with Microsoft.

      Stefan

  4. Thanks for the really good post!
If wanted to patch a really old 2016 to say “september 2018” (KB 4092459) I find myself in the position that KB4092459 has no language dependent component. What to do then?

Patch the language independent components to september (KB 4092459) and use the language dependent part fom august (KB 4022231)?
Or do first patch august both packages (KB 4032256 & KB 4022231) and patch to september from there?

    Thanks!

    1. Hi Nils,
in this case you would install the language independent fix from September and the language dependent fix from August.
No need to install two fixes for the language independent component.
      Cheers,
      Stefan
