Still on SharePoint 2010? (second edition)

I raised the same question already 4 months ago with a pre-warning that Mainstream support for SharePoint 2010 would end on October 13th, 2015.
Today is October 14th, 2015 which means that Mainstream support for SharePoint 2010 is over. SharePoint 2010 is now in extended support.
What does this mean for you as customer if you are still using SharePoint 2010?

  • We recommend to upgrade to SharePoint 2013.
  • Only security related hotfixes will be created for SharePoint 2010.
Any other problems in our product will not be fixed (except for customers who purchased Extended Hotfix Support through Premier Support).
  • Support cases which are caused by problems in our product will no longer be free of charge.
  • You will still get paid-support (including pay-per-incident Premier and Essential Support) through Microsoft Customer Support Services.
  • You can still get product-specific information using the online Microsoft Knowledge Base or Support site at Microsoft Help and Support to find answers to technical questions

  1. Hi Stefan,
what does that mean for the release of updates? Will there still be uber packages/cumulative updates, or only individual hotfix packages each when security issues are found and resolved?
Will there be (or is it planned to have) a November 2015 uber package, or just a list of ~1-5 individual security hotfixes, which will also be distributed automatically via the usual Windows Update/WSUS channel?
If you have some of this information, a little heads-up on those or similar questions might be nice in advance.
    Thank you and kind regards,
    Adrian

    1. Hi Adrian,
      great question!
For the next couple of months we will still see Uber packages and cumulative updates as there is a backlog of customer cases which have been escalated in the past and where the product group is currently working on fixes.
As soon as this backlog has been processed there will only be security fixes released as public updates. For these there will be no Uber package as this is only available for the CU.
      Cheers,
      Stefan

  2. Hi Stefan,
thanks a lot for the Information above.
Am I right that no SP3 will released? I’m asking because SP2 was released in July 2013, more than 2 years ago.
And as we’re still patching some productive environments, would you prefer to live with SP2 or do you suggest a special (later) CU?
Thanks for your great Support, Jens

    1. Hi Jens,
as SP2010 is out of mainstream support now there will be no more service packs.
      Cheers,
      Stefan

    2. Regarding your second question: we recommend to install CUs only to fix specific issues.
Service Packs and security fixes should be installed as soon as possible.
But you can always evaluate a CU in a test environment and verify that it does not cause any problems with your specific environment if you plan to apply it to your servers.
