Still on SharePoint 2010?

Just a heads-up in case that you still have SharePoint environments running on SharePoint 2010:

Mainstream support for SharePoint 2010 will end on October 13th, 2015:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle?p1=14944

After this date only security fixes will be provided for SharePoint 2010. That means if you are running into an issue after October 13th which is caused by a problem in SharePoint 2010 and which has not already been addressed before you will no longer be able to request a hotfix.
Not the best situation if you are using SharePoint 2010 as a business critical application.

There are still three months till deadline – enough time to evaluate SharePoint 2013 and consider an upgrade.

  1. Hi Stefan,

Thanks for the heads up. 🙂
Does this apply to SharePoint 2013 environments running Web Applications in 2010 mode (14.5) as well?

  2. Hi Frank,
it only applies to the product SharePoint 2010 – not to 2010 mode web applications running on SharePoint 2013.
    Cheers,
    Stefan

  5. Hi,

This applies even if SharePoint service pack 2 is installed?

  6. Without SP2 you are unsupported since a long time.
So yes: that applies for SP2010 with SP2.

  7. HI Stefan,

Does it mean MS will not release any CU after October which contains new fixes?

    Thanks RAM

  8. Hi RAM,

    thats more or less correct.
After end of mainstream support only security fixes will be created.

Customers are no longer able to request hotfixes for the product.
Hotfixes which have been requested before end of mainstream support will be finished.
So there will be a couple of CUs after October CU containing fixes which have been requested before October.

    Cheers,
    Stefan

  9. Hi Stefan,
What would be the minimum build number of SharePoint 2010 in order to perform a database detach/attach upgrade to SharePoint 2013 ? I was unable to find any KB article on this.
    Thanks.
