The product group released the July 2014 Cumulative Update for the SharePoint 2013 product family.
Yes, you are reading correct! The July 2014 CU. The bi-monthly CU release cycle is gone. The product group is now releasing CUs every month rather than every other month.
ATTENTION:
Be aware that all Update for SharePoint 2013 require SharePoint Server 2013 SP1 OR March 2013 PU for SharePoint 2013 to be installed first.
Please also have a look at the article that discusses how to properly patch a SharePoint 2013 farm which has Search enabled (see below).
Previous releases of the SharePoint Server 2013 cumulative update included both the executable and the .CAB file in the same self-extracting executable download. Because of the file size, the SharePoint Server 2013 package has been divided into several separate downloads. One contains the executable file, while the others contain the CAB file. All are necessary and must be placed in the same folder to successfully install the update. All are available by clicking the same Hotfix Download Available link in the KB article for the release.
This CU includes all SharePoint 2013 fixes released since RTM. The CU does not include SP1. You can install SP1 before or after installing this CU.
The KB articles for July CU are available at the following locations:
- KB 2882999 – SharePoint Foundation 2013 July 2014 CU
- KB 2882989 – SharePoint Server 2013 July 2014 CU
- KB 2882990 – SharePoint Server 2013 with Project Server July 2014 CU
- KB 2883003 – Office Web Apps Server 2013 July 2014 CU (KB delayed)
The Full Server Packages for July 2014 CU are available through the following links:
- Download SharePoint Foundation 2013 July 2014 CU
- Download SharePoint Server 2013 July 2014 CU
- Download Project Server 2013 July 2014 CU
- Download Office Web Apps Server 2013 July 2014 CU
After installing the fixes you need to run the SharePoint 2013 Products Configuration Wizard on each machine in the farm.
Be aware that the SharePoint Server 2013 CU contains the SharePoint Foundation CU. And the SharePoint Server 2013 with Project Server CU contains Project Server CU, SharePoint Server CU and SharePoint Foundation CU.

Stefan, thanks for the info. Does the new update cycle/frequency also apply to SharePoint 2010 and MOSS 2007?
Hi Leandro,
for SP2010 yes.
For 2007? That is out of hotfix support since a long time.
Only security fixes are created for 2007 – no CUs.

Stefan

What's the difference between KB2880990 and KB2883003? They both apply to OWAS 2013. Thanks.
2880990 is the PU, 2883003 is the CU. A CU can contain more than a PU. PU usually contains security fixes and other important fixes while a CU contains all fixes for the specific product.

Regarding the July 2014 SharePoint non security updates on Microsoft update:
http://blogs.technet.com/b/office_sustained_engineering/archive/2014/07/08/july-2014-office-update-release.aspx
And the earlier May 2014 SharePoint security updates?
https://technet.microsoft.com/library/security/ms14-022
Does Microsoft add these security / non-secuity updates into the code for the following month's CU, or do these security / non-security fixes still need to be installed separate from the CUs?
Do we also need to run SP Prod Config Wizard after installing security and/or non-security updates?

When will the details of what's included in the July CU be available? Thanks.

what's inside?

Hi Mike,
July CU contains all these fixes.
No need to install them separately.
If there would be a need I would blog about it.

Hi Stefan,
Earlier KB articles for CUs included a list of individual hotfixes (urls to their KB articles). This KB article does not have it and I noticed that these updates were released as well:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2880497/en-us
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2882987/en-us
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2883000/en-us
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2881088/en-us
For instance the June 2013 CU (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2817414/en-us) lists individual hotfixes under "This cumulative update package also fixes the issues that are described in the following
Microsoft Knowledge Base articles". Why was that changed? It's harder to decide if I need this update if I don't know what it fixes.

Hi all,
I will check back with the product group why the info about what is fixed is not included and whether the info can be added.
Cheers,
Stefan

Sharepoint 2013 cumulative updates took over 50 hours to install on our farm. Management is getting sick and tired of paying for all this overtime to update this bloated and convoluted product. It's bankrupting us with no solution to export to another
product. Thank you Microsoft.

Hi Doomed,
in your scenario I would recommend to use the approach listed here to speed up CU installation:

Hi Stefan, I am confused about the prereq for July 2014 CU. Do we need to install SP1 to ensure that we get all of the updates in SP1 or can we install March PU followed by July 2014 CU and have the exact same result? This is for SharePoint 2013 Server
but I guess the question applies to foundation and owa as well.
Hi Brendon,
you will have the same set of fixes in both scenarios – but not the same result.
The service pack not only installs fixes – it defines a new baseline for future fixes.
12 months after the service pack has been released future fixes will require the SP1 baseline and you will not be able to install them without having SP1 installed first.
Cheers,
Stefan
Permalink
Thanks Stefan, that makes more sense. So if someone installed July2014 CU without first installing SP1 do they just install SP1 or do they need to install both SP1 and July 2014 CU again?
Hi Brendon,
just install SP1 on top – no need to install July 2014 CU again.
Cheers,
Stefan

Is the Office Update Center going to be updated in a timely fashion? When I check it still shows June as the latest available CU. The previous version of the Office Update Center always seemed to get updated fairly quickly.

Hi Aaron,
I’m don’t have influence on the updates on Office Update Center.
But you can monitor my blog to get the latest infos.

HI Stefan,Information provided here is really helpful to share point community.Appreciate your efforts. In my farm we have already installed SP1 for SP2013.We are planning to apply July-cu,so I am wondering whether I can apply July-CU directly after SP1
by ignoring the April,June,MS14-022 or i need to followapply any CU before July CU?
Yes. Only SP1 and July CU is required.

thanks

Stefan,I would like to know whether I can install the patches as below order?
install of SP1,install of July-CU and run the Wizard one time only after installing both.
