April 2014 CU for SharePoint 2010 has been released

The product group released the April 2014 Cumulative Update for the SharePoint 2010 product family.

Be aware that the April Cumulative Update for SharePoint 2010 is a Post-SP2 hotfix. It is recommended to have SP2 installed before installing the April CU.

The KB articles for April CU will be available at the following locations in a couple of days:

  • KB 2878270 – SharePoint Foundation 2010
  • KB 2878250 – SharePoint Server 2010
  • KB 2878253 – SharePoint Server 2010 with Project Server (delayed – will be available in a couple of days)
As you see there is a separate Full Server Package for SharePoint Server 2010 with Project Server which simplifies patching of this common installation.

The Full Server Packages for April 2014 CU are available through the following links:

Be aware that the SharePoint Server 2010 CU contains the SharePoint Foundation CU. And the SharePoint Server 2010 with Project Server CU contains Project Server CU, SharePoint Server CU and SharePoint Foundation CU.
That means only one package has to be installed for the SharePoint 2010 product family.

  4. Stefan,

    Despite the fact you say:

"Be aware that the April Cumulative Update for SharePoint 2010 is a Post-SP2 hotfix. It is recommended to have SP2 installed before installing the April CU",

    KB 2878250 says:

"To install this cumulative update, you must have one of the following products installed:
Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 Service Pack 1 (SP1) or Service Pack 2 (SP2)
Microsoft SharePoint Foundation 2010 Service Pack 1 (SP1) or Service Pack 2 (SP2)",

meaning that you can install April 2014 CU over SharePoint 2010 SP1 (not necessarily over SharePoint 2010 SP2).

    Service Pack Support Lifecycke says:

"After a service pack is released, the n-1 build is supported for 12 months. After 12 months, updates for an n-1 build will not typically be shipped".

So, as SharePoint 2010 SP2 have been released in july 2013, wouldn't be right to say that we could still install April 2014 CU over SharePoint 2010 SP1 with no problems? Even the future June 2014 CU?

    Thanks in advance.

  5. Hi Elton,

I stated “recommended” not “required”. If it would not work with SP1 I would have stated “required”.
It is recommended to have SP2 installed before installing April CU is correct.

    Cheers,
    Stefan

  7. Stefen,

Our sharepoint 2010 farm is installed with June 2012 CU post SP1. If i install Apr 2014 CU without applying SP2 the farm will be also installed with previous CU's which has been released after SP2 but the CU's which has been released from June 2012 till SP2 will not be installed. Am i right?

Also if i am not wrong the build number will be changed to 14.0.7121.5004 after installing Apr 2014 CU and running the configuration wizard which is the latest build version. By seeing the build number i will assume that my sharepoint farm is patched up to date but still some CU's are not installed as mentioned above. How can we track this?

Please advise and correct me if iam wrong.

    Regrds,
    Vinoth.

  8. Hi Vinoth,

that is not correct. All CUs from SP1 are included in April 2014 CU.
But SP2 is not included. So you still have to install SP2 at a later time.

    Cheers,
    Stefan

  9. Thanks stefen for your clarification. I thought Sp2 will contain the list of CU's which has been released from SP1.So you mean to say that SP2 will contain some additional fixes which are not included in CU's?

Our sharepoint farm is patched till June 2012 post SP1 which includes project server 2010 as well. Can you check if below process is correct?
    1. Install sharepoint server 2010 SP2
    2. Install Sharepoint server 2010 SP2 Language pack if any
    3. Install Project server 2010 SP2
    4. Install Project server 2010 SP2 Language pack if any
    5. Install Apr 2014 CU KB 2878253 which includes Project server + Sharepoint server + sharepoint foundation CU's
    6. Run config wizard.

    Regrds,
    Vinoth.

  10. SP2 contains all fixes since RTM – not just since SP1. SP2 not necessarily contains additional fixes – but it defines a patch baseline on the system. Fixes 12 months after SP2 will not install without the SP2 patch baseline.

  12. Stefan, the link above (Download SharePoint Server 2010 with Project Server April 2014 CU) that flows through to the actual roll up CU for Proj/sharepoint and the request to MS for the link, it shows "Project Server 2013." Can I make the assumption that
it is for 2010 as well?

  13. Hi Lisa,
The fix is for 2010 not for 2013.
The 2013 info is incorrect. You can see that it is for 2010 by looking at the name in the "fix" column.

  14. I installed the sp2 then the cu april 2014 but the database version is showing "14.0.7121.5000" i belive it should be "14.0.7121.5004" but its not showing am i missing something?

  15. Hi Muhammad,

the database schema is controlled by the SharePoint Foundation layer. SharePoint server sits on top of it. So the schema version cannot be higher than the patch level of SharePoint foundation. If you check KB 2878270 you can see that the version of SharePoint
Foundation for April CU is 14.0.7121.5000.
