I will use this post to answer all the questions I received regarding SP2013 SP1:
Question: Is March 2013 PU required to install SharePoint 2013 SP1?
Answer: No. SP1 can be installed as well on the RTM baseline and on the March 2013 PU baseline (means all CUs later and including to March 2013 PU).
Question: Which version is SharePoint 2013 SP1?
Answer: The official version number is 15.0.4569.1506. You can see this version number e.g. in Control Panel – Programs.
Question: Which version number will I see in the Central Admin?
Answer: The configuration database version showing up in the Central Admin is 15.0.4569.1000
Question: Do I have to install as well SharePoint Foundation SP1 and Sharepoint Server SP1?
Answer: No. SharePoint Server SP1 includes SharePoint Foundation SP1.
Question: Do I have to install as well SharePoint Server SP1 and Project Server SP1?
Answer: Yes. The Project Server SP1 does NOT include SharePoint Server SP1
Question: Do I have to run the SharePoint Configuration Wizard after installing SP1
Answer: Yes. The configuration wizard has to be run after updates, including Service Packs, CUs and Security Fixes.
Question: Does SP1 now support installing SharePoint 2013 on Windows Server 2012 R2?
Answer: The SP1 update which is currently available for download does not allow the installation on Windows Server 2012 R2 as it is not possible to create a slipstream installation for SP1. You need to wait for the release of SharePoint 2013 with SP1 included.
Question: When will SharePoint 2013 with SP1 (also known as "slipstream version") be released?
Answer: I will provide an update on my blog as soon as the updated version is available for download.
Question: I have SharePoint 2013 installed with 3 language packs. Do I have to install also SP1 for all installed language packs?
Answer: Yes. Unlike Cumulative Updates the SharePoint Server 2013 SP1 package does not include the updates for additional language packs. You need to install the service pack for each installed language separately.
Question: Where can I find the list of all Fixes included in SP1 since RTM?
Answer: There is no consolidated List for all Fixes since RTM. Here you can find all fixes which are unique to SP1. Fixes included in earlier CUs are documented in the KB articles of these CUs.
Question: Where can I find information about SP1 for other Office Products?
Answer: The following three articles have information about SP1 for Office Client, Office Server and Exchange,
Question: Are there any known issues with the Service Packs
Answer: Ensure to read the KB article of each Service Pack carefully as known issues will be listed there. For SharePoint Foundation 2013 installations review this post: http://blogs.technet.com/b/stefan_gossner/archive/2013/10/26/october-2013-cu-for-sharepoint-2013-has-been-released.aspx

Great blog, concise and easy to read.

Stefan,
First I want to thank you for all your blog posts. I am a big fan and find your blog very helpful.
I did have a question with a slipstream installation of SP1 for SharePoint 2013 server. I was able to extract all files into the updates folder and install SharePoint without an issue. I'm not sure why you've claimed it is not possible to do this yet. Are there any unforseen issues or missing files with the current method of extracting and copying to the updates folder?
Thank you!

Hi Rob,
the information we received is that this method is not supported due to package layout changes.

Stefan

I came across this post (old post now) doing some research on slipstreaming. We have a dev\test\and production farm running with a Slipstream I created of SP1. Come to find out it is not supported. The damage is done. What can I do to fix the issue?

Thank you for the update. Do you know when the ISO of 2013 SP1 is available?

Hello, and thank you for your excellent blog posts! I have installed a language pack on our OWA server, but can't find it's SP1 version. Is there not a service pack for installed language on OWA servers?
Thanks, Trond

Hi Trond,
looking here it seems that all languages are included:

(expand Resolution, File Version, Microsoft Office Web Apps Server 2013 Language Pack SP1)

Do we know if this makes SharePoint 2013 compatible with Windows Server 2012 R2?
Thanks,

We were able to build a SP1 slipstream package and the installation works. We are going to stress test in a Sandbox and see how it goes.
Hi Steven,
This is unsupported due to changes in package layout it is not guaranteed that all files are patched properly using this method.
Please wait for official integrated build.
Cheers,
Stefan

With respect to above statement, I want to ask a very basic question:
Why Microsoft SharePoint team spends effort on releasing SP1 package separately, which cannot be used to upgrade the RTM-base product? Don’t you think its just a waste of time?
Hi KSDN,
there seems to be a misunderstanding: you can upgrade SP2013 RTM with the SP1 bits. But you can at create your own slipstream install. To setup a new server either install RTM and then SP1 or use the bits which have SP1 already integrated.
Hope this clarifies things,
Stefan

Hi,
I’d like to get Office Web Apps 2013 SP1 taken care of at the same time. Is there a particular order or recommended steps for this?
I also have multiple SharePoint servers in the Farm. I assume I’ll patch all of them, sequentially, then run the product wizard at the very end. Is that accurate?
Are there any step by step guides as the install instructions on the Microsoft website do not seem to cover it?

Hi,
What about Office Web Apps 2013 SP1, is it possible to install OWA on Server 2012 R2?
Hi Martijn,
yes it is possible to install OWA on Server 2012 R2. Then install SP1 afterwards.

From what some Microsoft people are telling me, since the Dec CU is wrapped up in SP1, we don't need to patch any of the SharePoint language packs to SP1. Does this make sense to you? (Noticing that Sp1 is a lot bigger than the SPs for 2010, so they are assuming that the Dec CU is included.)
Hi Bob,
Dec 2013 CU is part of SP1 – but SP1 is not part of Dec CU.
So what you say does NOT make sense to me.

Hi,
we have instead of the one OneDrive button the message: "The trial period for this product has expired."
Do you know something about this? btw. our license is ok 😉

Hi Wolfgang,
haven’t heard about such an issue. I would recommend to open a support case with Microsoft for this.

I am innstalling SP1 Language pack. Does it matter which order the Service Packs are innstalled? I am planning on first updating with SP1 then running config wizard, then running Language Pack SP1 then run config wizard again. Would it work to run both
updates first and then run config wizard just once in the end?
Hi Haavard,
you should first install all SP bits and only run psconfig once at the very end.
Cheers,
Stefan

Hi David, no that is not guaranteed – if you have SP1 of the language pack you should also upgrade the rest of SharePoint to SP1

Install RTM then SP1 then run configuration wizard?

Hi LTran,
that’s correct.

Hi Stefan, do database upgrades propagate ok across mirrored or AlwaysOn replicas? Or do I need to either remove the databases from Availability Groups or remove replica servers first?
