Picks of the week – 43/2011

During my daily work I quite often find an article which highlights interesting things – which are not worth a separate post to talk about. To still share them with you I have decided to publish such articles as a link list on my blog in the Picks of the week category.

Here are the picks for this week:

  • SharePoint 2010 and web templates
Nice article explaining not only the new web template functionality in SharePoint 2010 but also all the other possible ways to provision sites through feature stapling, site templates, site definitions and provisioning provider.

  • Introduction to SharePoint Feature Stapling
These two articles give a very good explanation of how feature stapling works and how it can be used to change the behavior of an existing site definition without touching it.
Part 2 which will highlight how to overcome a common road block can be found here.

  • SharePoint 2010 PowerShell Command Builder
One of my colleagues summarizes a nice tool. The Windows PowerShell Command Builder for SharePoint 2010 Products and Office 365 is a Silverlight application that enables IT pros and power users to visually assemble commands in the browser and then take those commands to their respective products.

  • SharePoint 2010 Visio Stencil Kit
Designing for SharePoint can be a challenging endeavor; what may seem to be an innocuous design element can occasionally lead to days or even weeks of development effort. The SharePoint Stencil Kit to enable user experience designers to mock up funtionality for SharePoint quickly. Prereq is that Visio 2010 is installed.

  • Configure availability by using SQL Server database mirroring
This article contains a very good summary on how to enable database mirroring with SharePoint 2010.
